Most job searches fail quietly from a lack of strategy, not a lack of effort. Applying to everything with the same resume, at the same pace, with no plan, burns weeks without much to show for it. Here's a simple three-tier system instead.
Tier 1: Dream roles (tailor hard, apply slow)
A handful of roles you'd genuinely be excited about. These deserve a fully tailored resume, a real cover letter if the company reads them, and, most importantly, an attempt to find a warm introduction before you ever hit "apply" cold.
Tier 2: Strong-fit roles (tailor fast, apply often)
The bulk of your pipeline should live here: roles you're clearly qualified for where speed matters more than a hand-crafted cover letter. This is where a tool that tailors your resume in seconds instead of an hour changes how many of these you can realistically get through in a week.
Tier 3: Stretch/practice roles (low effort, low expectation)
Roles slightly outside your current experience level. Worth applying to for the practice and the occasional surprise callback, but don't spend real tailoring time here.
The part everyone skips: a weekly review
Once a week, look at what actually happened: how many applications, how many responses, how many interviews. If Tier 2 applications aren't converting to interviews at all, the resume is usually the problem, not the strategy. If interviews aren't converting to offers, that's a different fix entirely (see our interview prep post).
Zivka Apply Extension is built specifically for Tier 2: fast, tailored, high-volume applying without sacrificing quality. Its Applications dashboard gives you exactly the weekly-review data this strategy depends on.
